driver picks the music

This post is such an obligatory Supernatural post. I'm not even kidding. I have a few excuses to go along with it though: 1. Perfect excuse to picspam pictures 2. Perfect excuse to share music from the show with you all 3. Perfect to excuse to, once again, ramble on about the show 4. Ummm, I don't have another excuse.

Behind the cut you'll find my Top 15 Music Moments In Supernatural. The music department for this show is absolutely amazing, and I really love that Kripke only wants classic rock music to be played on his show. That's part of what this show is- the music. If Dean Winchester listened to the anything but classic rock, I don't think he'd be Dean Winchester. But that's just me. We all have our guilty pleasure music moments, but for Dean I think we all know his is REO Speedwagon. lol

ETA #1: By request of [livejournal.com profile] katieupsidedown, I've made this post public. It makes complete sense, now, to make it public considering I love talking about this show with people, and I'm all for spreading the love of music. :) So you're more than welcome to spread the link around.

ETA #2: If any of the music links die, please let me know. I'll be more than happy to re-upload any songs for you! :)

ETA #3: An update! The moments in this post stretch over Seasons 1-3. I always intended to do a part 2 to this post, but it never happened (still could though!). I just wanted to thank you all of you for commenting and continuing to enjoy this post!

All caps by me. :)
These aren't really in any particular order, until I get to the Top 3, because I have 3 moments that truly cannot be topped.

15.
Episode: Dream A Little Dream of Me, Season 3
Song: Dream A Little Dream of Me - Mama Cass
Why This Song: I know a lot of people in the fandom don't particularly like Lisa, or the fact that Dean would dream about wanting to be with her. But honestly, are we really that surprised and appalled by it? The one thing Dean wants is a family, an actual family. That's what Dean sees in Lisa, and whether or not it's actually her and her son he wants to be a family with, she represents that part of Dean that wants more than anything to have someone to come home to, which is why this song totally encompasses that. It was one of the few beautiful moments in any episode of Supernatural.

14.
Episode: Sin City, Season 3
Song: Run Through The Jungle - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Why This Song: I've only ever seen/heard this song in the context of the Vietnam War, because that's the time when this song was played a lot, and that's really what John Fogerty is singing about. I would've never pinned this song as a "sexy song", and I wouldn't have put it on any of kind "music I listen to when I want to dance and be sexy." But in this episode it fits so well. The second you hear the rumble at the beginning, and then Sam and Dean are just walking through a sea of women, you just know something dirty and sexy is about to happen.

13.
Episode: Hell House, Season 1
Song: Fire of Unknown Origin - Blue Oyster Cult
Why This Song: Why wouldn't I put this on the list? Dean Winchester singing? C'mon. It's the first time we really hear Dean singing, like actually singing(the only other times I can recall are in Season 2 in Simon Said, and most recently in Season 3 with Mystery Spot and No Rest For The Wicked). The irony of the song is how it actually fits with John Winchester- fire of unknown origin, took my baby away.

12.
Episode: Scarecrow, Season 1
Song: Bad Company - Bad Company
Why This Song: I'll be honest, the first time I saw Meg, I had no idea she was a demon/evil/had other motives for being with Sam. She was just a regular girl to me; escaping her life like Sam was doing. So I was completely floored at the end of this episode when, SURPRISE, she's in cahoots with the Yellow Eyed Demon. There's no other song that could fit this scene more than this one. It makes the scene so much more intense, and makes Meg that dark character she turned out to be.

11.
Episode: Faith, Season 1
Song: Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
Why This Song: MORE COWBELL! No really, what other song could possibly have played during this scene? The first time I watched this episode I seriously got goosebumps- the girl is running for her life from a creature she has no idea what it is, and then you have this song playing over the scene. It's just amazing! One of the best songs in a scene of this show ever, it worked with that scene so brilliantly.

10.
Episode: Devil's Trap, Season 1
Song: Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Why This Song: I CAN NEVER LISTEN TO THIS SONG THE SAME EVER AGAIN. Kripke has ruined this song for me! Don't get me wrong, I still love the song, but every single time I listen to it I always think of the Winchesters driving down the road, beaten and broken, wondering if they're going to be able to find the Yellow Eyed Demon, UNTIL OH MY GOD HUGE FUCKIN' MACK TRUCK SLAMS INTO THE IMPALA!!! The lyrics fit the scene perfectly, and I still jump when the Impala gets slammed by the mack truck. Thank you, Supernatural.

09.
Episode: Bloody Mary, Season 1
Song: Laugh, I Nearly Died - The Rolling Stones
Why This Song: Before I explain why this song, here's some irony for you- at the end of this episode, Sam flat out tells Dean that he'd die for him(IT GETS TO ME EVERY TIME BECAUSE, HELLO SEASON 2!) Anyway. So we have Sam who's still dealing with Jessica's death, dealing with the fact that days before her death he dreamed about her dying, and just... dealing with shit. And he's Sam, he can handle anything, right? Cut to that moment when he sees Jess standing on the sidewalk, as if she were as real as the first time he ever saw her. This song will never not make me think of Sam, and not tear up for Jess. It's all about the lyrics; if you pay attention to the lyrics of this song, it's pretty clear why this song was chosen to play over this scene. Excellent choice, in my opinion.

08.
Episode: Folsom Prison Blues, Season 2
Song: Rooster - Alice In Chains
Why This Song: ain't found a way to kill me yet / walkin' tall machine gun man, they spit on me in my homeland / here they come to snuff the rooster. The end of this episode gives me chills because of this song. I don't know who decided to use this song for the end of this episode, but it fits so well, and goes right along with where the Winchesters were at that point. You can never go wrong with Layne Staley.

07.
Episodes: Roadkill, Season 2
Song: House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Why This Song: Open with a car driving down a dark, snowy road. A couple is lost trying to find their way, but every sign looks the same, and while they think they're on the right highway, they really aren't. Cue the radio playing this song, suddenly you feel goosebumps rise on your arms, because as you're listening to the song you know something really bad is about to happen. I don't think any other song could've set the right mood for this scene more than this one.

06.
Episode: Born Under A Bad Sign, Season 2
Song: Ashes To Ashes - Tarbox Ramblers
Why This Song: Because my Momma fangirls this song so hard. That's not entirely my reason, but this song made her love Sam Winchester a lot more than she already did(oh, Momma). First of all, I'd never even heard of this song, let alone this band, until I downloaded the music for this episode. I really want to know who chose this particular song to play, because it'll always be The Evil Sam Winchester Theme Song, for me anyway. When he walks into the bar Jo's working at, and the jukebox is suddenly playing this song, you just know Sam is about to do something really bad(but in a horribly good way). Every time I watch this episode I feel like the jukebox knew Sam was coming. LOL! So it just started playing this song. I get chills just thinking about Sam in that scene.

05.
Episode: Houses of the Holy, Season 2
Song: Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
Why This Song: This episode is not only one of my favorite episodes(for reasons that are far too elaborated to really go into detail), but this is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, and I'm really not a huge Bob Dylan fan. So when watching the end of this episode, and then hearing this song? I started to cry. Seriously crying. For me the end of this episode is, honestly, beautiful. And it's such a private moment between Sam and Dean that I almost felt like I was intruding- but this is totally just me. Again with the lyrics, they fit so well with Sam and Dean, and everything going on with them at that time in the season. It's just a really amazing song for a really amazing Sam and Dean moment.

04.
Episode: Skin, Season 1
Song: Hey Man, Nice Shot - Filter
Why This Song: This song totally gets your blood pumping during this scene. Shapeshifter!Dean is running from the law, and then he's in the sewer, and then Jensen's shirt is coming off(give me a break! lol), and then Dean's skin is coming off! The entire time I was watching this scene I just kept thinking how fucking awesome this song went along with what was going on. It's songs like these that I don't hear in such a long time, and then hear them on Supernatural, or another show, and I suddenly remember why I loved the song in the first place.

03.
Episode: Nightshifter, Season 2
Song: Renegade - Styx
Why This Song: As I was typing Nightshifter, I got fuckin' chills. Don't even try and tell me when you were watching the end of this episode that you weren't biting your hands in excitement and nervousness wondering whether that was Sam and Dean in the closet, or them running away. YOU JUST DIDN'T KNOW!!!!!! You didn't know until it showed them actually walking towards the Impala, well, some of you might've known, but I was on the edge of my fuckin' seat the entire time! The second, and I mean the second, I heard oh mama I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law(I JUST GOT CHILLS AGAIN!) I looked at my Momma and we both said, "BEST SONG EVER!" This is seriously one of the best endings of an episode. It's probably my favorite ending of an episode. I have goosebumps just sitting here typing out why.

02.
Episode: Hunted, Season 2
Song: White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
Why This Song: I don't care what anyone says, this is by far the best opening of an episode of Supernatural ever. There was no other song that could've played during this scene to give it that completely dark feel, and that feeling of wondering just what the hell was going on. Because you know the entire time that the kid is going to die, why else would this song be playing? But not knowing who killed him is the best part, because your mind is running down a list of possible people, and the last person you'd expect would be Gordon Walker. Kudos to Supernatural for this episode as a whole, too.

01.
Episode: Skin, Season 1
Song: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
Why This song: This song is why I love Supernatural. There are a million other reasons I could name off for why I love this show, but the very first time I watched this episode, and the black screen came up with St. Louis, Mo., and Iron Butterfly started up, I fell completely and utterly in love with this show. I had no idea it was Dean Winchester cutting up that girl. I had no idea why his eyes were glowing. I had no idea why he would even think of hurting someone like that. BUT I WANTED TO KNOW. This song just completely set the tone of the episode for me, and while I rarely listen to it when shuffling my music(because it's like 17 minutes long, and that's 17 minutes of my life I'll never get back), it still holds the place as my #1 Music Moment on Supernatural.

I watched the episode about 2 weeks ago. I went on a episode binge and watched some from S1 and S2. LOL *hugs dvds*

Johnny Cash Promo. It's seriously so amazing. And I heard somewhere that the song use was Jared's idea. *LOVES HIM A LOT* I remember when this turned up on the internets, and myself and a friend of mine stayed awake at 4AM watching it for about 2 hours. LMAO I finally downloaded it last year sometime, so I can have it forever. lol *lame*

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the songs they've used for recaps are really awesome! I think Hair of the Dog by Nazareth for the SOON Promo was my favorite- clicky!

UGH! That still gets my blood pumping!

[identity profile] mosaic.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh trust me, I binge like mad on this show. A small group of us LJers sometimes get together on AIM chats and watch episodes together. We never watch fewer than three or four episodes in a row.

Holy crap! That promo wins forever. Was that when there was a mid-season break last season? I only started watching the show right before AHBL and didn't have a TV at the time, so this is my first season watching it on TV. (Hence the not ever seeing the promos.) *watches promo some more*

:O!!!!!!!!! ~*~jealous~*~

Yeah, it was for the mid-season break last season. :)

[livejournal.com profile] spn_support is the comm we all come from if you're interested in joining us! Hint: You may want to skim the chat transcripts before you dive in so you know what you're getting into. We're a little crazy sometimes. :) To give you an idea, we call our group-AIM-watching-sessions "orgies." But I'm sure everyone would love to have you!!

Thanx for uploading the songs. I saved #11 and #4. Could you please tell me what kind of program would play the files? WMP doesn't seem to resognize them.

[identity profile] heizqu.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, this post is BRILLIANT. Excellent Top15! #3 is my absolute favourite music moment in SPN ever. It's just that amazing.

Downloaded a couple of songs that (for some odd reason) I didn't already have. :D

(Here via the newsletter, btw)

[identity profile] kilynn16.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
IAW this entire post! I snagged the songs I didn't already have, thanks so much.

Man, I need to go watch Skin now.

[identity profile] coffeebits.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahahaha xD
DO IT!

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the post. :)

I use iTunes, but normally I don't have a problem playing songs on WMP(iTunes is weird about repeating 1 song, so I sometimes use WMP for that). I'm pretty sure if you google file converters for song files, there might be something you could use to convert the files from m4a to mp3. :)

:D! Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I watch Skin probably every week. *LAME*

Thank you so much for compiling this list and making the music available!!! This is so so great! Exactly what I have been looking for! I've become very interested in the SPN music and have spent some time exploring stuff on the net that I'd never even heard of before...And now I find myself listening to loads of not-so-new great music, thanks to you.
I can't wait to create a folder with Supernatural music on my MP3 player!

[identity profile] all-feeling.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
iTunes worked perfectly...fanks.

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome!

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You're immensely welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed!! It's great to hear people saying that they would've never listened to, or even heard about this music if it wasn't for Supernatural playing it. So enjoy all the music you downloaded!

[identity profile] i-speak-tongue.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You've picked most of my favorites too! Awesome job with this! I just watched Bloody Mary again yesterday, and downloaded that Stones song. So good. I also am totally on board with the Opening scene of Hunted. I was so enthralled. Just blew me away.

Now, if only they would get their act in gear this season with the music... Even if it's just in the previously...

[identity profile] skies-of-honey.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that one! My favorite is the UK promo for season one (http://youtube.com/watch?v=cGZeu-eZIqo), even though it doesn't have anything to do with anything{Why exactly is Sam being molested by the Woman in White? I don't get it, lol}. But I think it looks cool as hell and The Killing Moon is like one of my fave songs, so yeah.

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah the lack of music this season is kind of sad. :\

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I TOTALLY APPROVE OF THAT ONE, TOO!!!!!

[identity profile] vardaofstars.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I got here from [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter.

This post fucking kills. Top 3 are made of so much win. I might push Renegade up one spot though, because I seriously screamed when it came on during that ep.

I, too, grew up with classic rock and it's ALWAYS been my favorite genre. It's so awesome that it's a crucial part of my favorite show.

Thanks for posting the music!

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it, because I had so much fun doing it. And it only started out as something to just fangirl about with my friends list, until I was asked to share it with everyone and I'm so glad I did that now. :)

It IS crucial to the show! It wouldn't be Supernatural without the music.

[identity profile] growltiger00.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanx! I am enjoying the music so much! Went on a long train journey today and stood there on the platform grinning like a loon when Iron Butterfly started playing on my MP3-player...

[identity profile] quidditchkiss.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!!!! Amazing!

[identity profile] annalouwho.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
all right, i waited until i was completely caught up with the show before commenting. i agree with nearly every single one, but definitely ESPECIALLY YOUR TOP THREE.

my list would be a little different, though. it would definitely have "back in black" on it from "bloodlust" for one thing. i was sort of reading some of the other comments, and i get that you like that song in the pilot, but for me that part of the scene has always bothered me, because dean clearly takes the tape labeled "metallica" out of sam's hand and puts it in the tapeplayer, and it plays AC/DC. that's ALWAYS bothered me.

you also didn't include any songs from any of the "then"s or "the road so far"s! "time has come today" and "hell's bells" being my personal favorites.
